Meet Our Surgeons

Christopher Bonzon, m.d.

Dr. Christopher Bonzon received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Stanford University and his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine. He completed residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of North Carolina. He then completed postgraduate fellowship training in interventional sports and spine medicine, as well as diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound, before completing additional fellowship training in spine and sports musculoskeletal medicine with his current group. He is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He has presented nationally and locally regarding diagnostic and treatment strategies for neuro-musculoskeletal dysfunction. Dr. Bonzon has co-authored and performed research for published book chapters on interventional ultrasound techniques for musculoskeletal injuries and disorders. He has conducted research on the return of amputees to physically demanding jobs.

robert s. gamburd, m.d.

Dr. Gamburd completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan in 1977. He then went on to receive his medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1980. Dr. Gamburd completed his residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Stanford University Medical School, and then completed a Fellowship in sports medicine with Sports, Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Medicine Associates (SOAR) in Redwood City, California. Dr. Gamburd is Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Dr. Gamburd is a former Assistant Clinical Professor with the Department of Functional Restoration at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Gamburd is a consultant team physician for the San Francisco 49ers and a medical consultant for the San Francisco Ballet Company.

He is a founding Board Member of the Physiatric Association of Spine, Sports, and Occupational Rehabilitation and International Spinal Injection Society and he has given numerous national lectures and published articles on injections.

Dr. Gamburd’s clinical and research focus is on: head and neck injuries, spinal stenosis and rehabilitation, pain management, lower extremity nerve injuries, and intraspinal injections.

Gerald P. Keane, m.d.

Dr. Gerald Paul Keane is a board certified physiatrist. He graduated from University of Rhode Island. Dr. Keane received his medical education from Brown University Medical School and completed his residency at Stanford University Medical Center.

Dr. Keane serves as team physician for Stanford University Athletics and is a consultant team physician for the San Francisco Forty-Niners. Dr. Keane is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Functional Restoration at Stanford University School of Medicine. He concentrates his care in spine related disorders.

Since 1992 Dr. Keane has served as a team physician and now clinical physician and consultant at the University of California, Berkeley. Previously he has acted as a team physician for the U.S. Figure Skating Association.

Dr. Keane has lectured nationally and published extensively on physical medicine and rehabilitation.

jeffrey a. saal, m.d.

Dr. Saal completed his undergraduate studies at the State University of New York in 1971. He then went on to Tulane University School of Medicine where he received his medical degree in 1975. Dr. Saal completed two residency programs, one in Internal Medicine at Boston University which he completed in 1978, and a second residency program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Stanford which he completed in 1981. Dr. Saal holds board certifications in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Internal Medicine, and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. He, along with Michael Dillingham, M.D., founded Sports, Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Medicine Associates (SOAR), the medical group responsible for treating the San Francisco 49ers, Stanford University, Santa Clara University, and many other Bay Area teams. Dr. Saal is a former Associate Clinical Professor at Stanford University, and the University of California, Irvine.

Dr. Saal is a founding member and Past President of the North American Spine Society (NASS). Dr. Saal is one of a few select members of the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS). Additionally, Dr. Saal founded the Physiatric Association of Spine, Sports, and Occupational Rehabilitation (PASSOR). This association emphasizes non-surgical and minimally invasive approaches to the practice of musculoskeletal medicine.

Dr. Jeffrey Saal, along with his brother Joel co-developed the IDET technology and procedure for treating degenerative painful discs.

Dr. Saal has lectured internationally and published books, book chapters, and original research in the fields of spine care, disc disorders, and sports medicine. He is a member of the editorial boards for many journals including SPINE. Dr. Saal has served as visiting professor at a number of medical schools throughout the country.

Dr. Jeffrey Saal’s research work and publications have revolutionized the care of painful spinal disorders. With his brother, Joel Saal, M.D., their research in biochemical mediators of pain and nonsurgical therapy have been at the forefront of spinal medicine. Dr. Jeffrey Saal has presented his research studies at international conferences worldwide.

joel saal, m.d.

Dr. Saal completed his undergraduate studies at the State University of New York in 1975. Dr. Joel Saal then went on to receive his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in 1980. He completed his training in Internal Medicine at the Children’s Hospital Medical Center in San Francisco in both internship and residency programs in 1983. He then completed a residency program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Stanford University in 1986. Dr. Saal is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is also Board Certified in Electrodiagnostic Medicine.

Dr. Saal is a partner in the Physiatry Medical Group practice at SOAR in Redwood City, California, and serves as a Team Physician for Men’s and Women’s Athletics at Santa Clara University, and a consultant to the San Francisco 49ers Football Team. Dr. Saal is a former Associate Clinical Professor for the Department of Functional Restoration at Stanford University.

Dr. Joel Saal, along with his brother Dr. Jeffrey A. Saal, co-developed the IDET technology and procedure for treating painful degenerative discs.

Dr. Joel Saal’s clinical work and research have been an important influence in both national and international circles on the practice of spinal medicine. He has been a principal author in numerous original research publications regarding the role of inflammation and pain in lumbar disc disease and the non-surgical treatment of painful spine disorders. His work has played a pivotal role in changing the approach to the treatment and understanding of painful lumbar spine disorders. HIs and Dr. Jeffrey Saal’s original research has been presented at spine conferences all over the world.

Dr. Saal is a member of the North American Spine Society and has served as a member of the Board of Directors of that organization. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and a founding board member of the Physiatric Association of Spine, Sports, and Occupational Rehabilitation (PASSOR). Dr. Saal has been an invited lecturer at the annual meetings of the Federation of Spine Associations, the North American Spine Society and the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Donna oversees the daily operations of Radiology services and collaborates with the center’s staff to ensure a safe and positive patient outcome. Donna received her education and training at Blodgett Memorial Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After relocating to the Bay Area, she has worked at various hospitals and surgery centers. She is passionate about providing excellent patient care and helping in her local community.
